Jason, do you believe the death penalty should be abolished? YES » NO » The death penalty is an unjust and inhumane practice that's often discriminatory and fueled by systemic biases. Black people, low-income people, and those with mental health issues or disabilities are disproportionately more likely to receive the death penalty than their white and wealthy peers. Research has shown that the prospect of receiving the death penalty has failed to serve as a deterrent to crime and does not positively impact the healing of victims. Donald Trump has promised to expand the death penalty if he's re-elected to the presidency. He's expressed his intent to reintroduce long banned execution methods, such as the firing squad. If Trump gets his way, it would represent a significant step backward in our nation's journey towards a more humane and just society. In the past few decades, more and more states have enacted moratoriums on punitive execution or even outright banned it. Pharmaceutical companies that produce lethal injection drugs have also begun to refuse their products to be used to carry out executions. Public support for this brutal practice has dwindled. It's clear: the death penalty has no place in a just society. We should be working towards the creation of an equitable justice system.
