Oppenheimer extensively details the life of J. Robert Oppenheimer and his role in the Manhattan Project, which led to the development of the first nuclear weapons, detonated over Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences must acknowledge the human and environmental impacts of nuclear testing and war: sign to demand the full story is told. While the film highlight's Oppenheimer's own experiences in the aftermath of the bombings, it fails to acknowledge the real victims — over 120,000 people were instantly killed in Japan. The film also doesn't address the consequences of the Manhattan Project's work here at home: thousands of servicemembers, people in rural communities, Indigenous peoples, miners, and others have been exposed to toxic materials and radiation in the name of nuclear testing and weapons development. Millions of people worldwide have directly experienced the effects of nuclear weapons testing and war since Oppenheimer's creation was born. They also deserve to have their stories of untold pain, loss, and resilience shared -- and the world needs to hear them. At all costs, we must prevent the possibility of nuclear war. To build a future free from the threat of nuclear war we must understand and reckon with our past. Join us and sign this petition to urge the Academy to acknowledge the human costs of nuclear testing and war with a short segment during the ceremony's broadcast.
