In March, Donald Trump kicked President Zelenskyy out of the Oval Office. Last week, he cozied up to Putin. But now, after facing public outrage and international pressure, Trump might be changing his tune.
This past weekend, Trump met briefly with President Zelenskyy in Rome at Pope Francis' funeral. It wasn't exactly a breakthrough — but for the first time in a long time, Trump publicly questioned Putin's motives and even called for stronger sanctions.
Let's be clear: One meeting and one Truth Social post will not and cannot erase years of betrayal. Trump froze U.S. aid to Ukraine. Trump pushed a "peace" plan that handed Ukrainian land to Putin. Trump tried to lift sanctions on Russia while Ukraine was under attack.
We know better than to trust a photo op. We know what side Trump is really on — and it's not the side of democracy. At Democratic Values, we are sending a message to the Ukrainian people: The American people stand firmly with you — and we always will.
