During this time of year, I try to find extra time for family and sometimes to read a good book — for me, it's usually something about American history and how our founders took the concepts of the Enlightenment and tried to form a new nation based on ideals of equality and liberty. Their struggle to do that in an imperfect world inspires me today. I love to read about Lincoln and his ability to lead and do what's right when the forces of war, politics and evil were all around him. And I also love reading about the Greatest Generation, who fought against fascism and tyranny to protect the world and make it safe for democracies to thrive.
I love this nation enough to always want to learn more about it, the good and the bad. I fiercely love what Americans of the past have handed down to us. I believe in it, but I also know that it's not inevitable that our country stands for freedom, tolerance, rule of law, equality and democracy. These ideals didn't just fall from the sky. They were fought for and they still need to be protected.
I'm convinced now that if we are not consistently fighting for a more perfect union, then we will lose the best of what America is supposed to become. I, for one, want to shape America for the future that I want my own kids and grandkids to inherit.
There has never been a more important time to be a part of actively working to protect and defend our democracy than right now. I want to thank you for joining me in this fight. It's not enough to just take in the news. For people like you and me, we have to take action — that's exactly what we will keep on doing.
OK, I can feel the glares from across the room. From a laptop that's about to get shut down for a few days, let me send my very best wishes to you and your family for a wonderful holiday season.
Best,
Amy
