Too often, districts containing communities of color are redrawn to dilute minority voting power. This map manipulation is just one tool that Republicans use to suppress the Democratic vote. We'll let the facts speak for themselves: in the past 20 years, when Republicans have had control over the redistricting process, they've increased their own seat share in Congress by an average of over 9% in the next election. In the past 20 years, when Democrats controlled redistricting, they've increased their own seat share by 0%. Read that again: Republican redistricting increases their own seat share by over 9%, compared to 0% when Democrats have control. It's clear which party is beholden to undemocratic practices while the other trusts and empowers voters to make their own choices. This backwards and anti-democracy partisan map manipulation must end. Sign the petition if you agree. Texas and North Carolina are just two examples of the extreme gerrymandering enforced by Republicans nationwide. For example, North Carolina saw a nearly even split in statewide votes in 2020, but Republicans redrew the map to secure a vast majority of the state's congressional seats. In Texas, urban areas like Houston and Dallas/Fort Worth have recently seen significant population growth, especially among communities of color, but district lines have been redrawn in a way calculated to minimize these citizens' votes. This repressive practice creates strangely shaped districts and significantly weakens electoral influence of the diverse urban populations that reflect the makeup of our country. Democrats have continuously attempted to combat gerrymandering through legislative action like the For the People Act and the Freedom to Vote Act, which were stifled by Republican filibusters. Gerrymandering threatens the very fabric of our nation and its democracy. Voters should have the ability to elect their own representatives without partisan manipulation perpetrated by power-hungry Republicans.
