We put Maine's legislators on notice

On Monday, every legislator whose district voted for the red flag law got a personal email from us.

Dear Jason, A few weeks ago, Representative Laurel Libby of Maine's 9th district posted in red on her Facebook page, complaining about the state's new Extreme Risk Protection Order (ERPO) law, also known as the Red Flag law.   If she expects her constituents to join in her rant, she'd be sadly mistaken – the ERPO Constitutional question passed in the 9th district with 62.3% of the vote!   And she knows these numbers – because the Maine Gun Safety Coalition filled her in.   On Monday, every legislator whose district voted for the red flag law got a personal email from us, letting them know just what percentage of their constituents voted for commonsense gun safety.  Now none of them can say with a straight face that they are following their constituents' wishes if they vote against bills like the 72-hour waiting period and responsible business practices for gun dealers. And we're lobbying in person in Augusta, too!   We're pushing our legislators hard for our priority bills, and we're also putting them on notice – voters want gun safety! DONATE On Monday we reminded our legislators that nearly 2 out of 3 voters passed the red flag law. And we aren't talking just one section of Maine. The red flag won bipartisan support in:  Both Congressional districts 12 out of 16 counties 27 out of 35 State Senate districts 112 out of 151 State Representative districts Maine wants to address our gun violence problem, full stop. And it shouldn't take ballot questions to get it done – that's what our legislature is for!   That's why we're taking the momentum from Question 2 and demanding that our representatives pass bills including LD 1821, which would rein in gun trafficking in Maine. We're also pushing them to reject challenges to the 72 hour waiting period.   And for those legislators who won't commit to passing gun safety legislation? We're going to work hard to give people in their districts commonsense candidates instead!   We need to build on our legislative wins now, while we have the momentum.
