The lawsuit about our 72 hour waiting period

This week, the United States Supreme Court declined to hear a gun lobby-backed lawsuit challenging Maine’s 72-hour waiting period law.

We know, thanks to reporting from the Department of Public Safety, that Maine’s 72-hour waiting period has already worked to save lives from preventable gun deaths in our state. And now, despite the gun lobby’s best efforts, our waiting period law will continue to save lives.

While this is a major legal victory for this law, this is far from the end of the road.

We have pro-gun lobby lawmakers in Augusta right now trying to repeal this law through the legislature – and if we don’t elect our gun safety candidates, they could have the votes to do it. With just 14 days left until Election Day, would you help us capitalize on this momentum with a contribution to support our political program right now?

We passed this law in the wake of the Lewiston shooting, and we have data to prove that it is saving lives in Maine right now.

This is a good law, but the gun lobby and its henchmen don’t care. If they get their way, their allies in the legislature will repeal it.

We cannot – and will not – let that happen. Would you make a contribution right now to invest in our political program in these final 14 days? We have to elect our gun safety champions to Augusta so they can defend and protect this law after the gun lobby’s lawsuit failed.

Thank you,

– MGSC
