Jason, I'm the Executive Director of the Voter Protection Project and I'm fuming with rage.
House Republicans just passed The Save America Act—a voter suppression bill that directly attacks families like mine.
My wife and I met in 2016 working at a Democratic polling firm. We knocked doors together. We worked midterms together. We postponed our wedding when COVID shut the world down.
When we finally got married in 2022, we combined our last names — something our friends had joked about for years. It felt joyful. It felt like building a life together.
Like millions of married women in this country, that means our birth certificates no longer match our legal names.
We're lucky. We both have updated passports with our new last name.
But unfortunately, a lot of Americans don't.
The SAVE Act would create new documentation requirements that could turn something as common as a name change into a barrier to registering and voting.
Noncitizen voting is already illegal and exceedingly rare.
This bill doesn't solve a real problem. It tells us exactly who Republicans don't want at the ballot box. And that's why we're fighting back.
