That's not Nancy Pelosi, or Chuck Schumer. It's Paul Ryan — the same Paul Ryan who was Republican speaker of the House under Trump. He's now joined the ranks of officials sounding the alarms.
The 2024 election will be a showdown of authoritarianism vs. democracy. And I'm going to do whatever it takes to make sure democracy wins. Are you with me?
Trump is now on the record saying that he will not defend America's allies against Russian attacks. That's an astounding sentence to write for those of us who've spent time in the military — or, heck, for anyone who knows a little bit about world history. Under Trump, the United States is ready to turn its back on eight decades of alliance. Wow.
But here's why I'm optimistic that we can win this existential fight for our democracy. People like Paul Ryan aren't unicorns. If even he sees the danger staring us in the face, then a whole lot of voters Trump is relying on do, too. He thinks because they supported him before, they're sure to do so again.
Our research says otherwise. Large swaths of independent voters and even many traditional Republicans are horrified by Trump's turn toward authoritarianism. If we do our jobs this year, they will leave Trump behind at the polls.
That's where I'm hoping you'll help out. We're running about $31,000 behind our February budget target and we have just a few days left to get there — will you chip in to fund the work of reaching pro-democracy voters in battleground states?
Thank you,
Amy
