More bad news for Alaska fishing

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game is implementing widespread closures and restrictions for the 2026 King Salmon season due to historically low runs — including a total ban on retention and catch-and-release fishing in 13 areas. The Kenai. The Susitna. Cook Inlet. And so many more. For many families, King Salmon isn't a hobby. It's food security. It's culture. It's tradition passed down for generations. It's freezers filled to get through long winters. And now, once again, those runs aren't there. This is devastating. No other way to put it. Alaskans have relied on strong king salmon returns for generations. But trawling and excessive bycatch are contributing significantly to the decimation of our fisheries — and year after year, politicians in DC look the other way. We don't need more studies.
