Jason,
It's hard to be shocked by anything Trump says these days. But he just crossed a line so fundamental that even I can't believe it.
At a rally over the weekend, he told the world that if an ally is "delinquent" in paying NATO dues that he'd let Russia do "whatever the hell they want" to them.
From what I've heard from former colleagues in national security, this threat is shaking the foundations of one of our most essential alliances. Article 5 of NATO's founding treaty makes it clear that an attack on one nation is an attack on all. It's a pact that has undeniably made the world safer and made the United States stronger on the world stage — and it's one we relied on heavily after 9/11.
Trump's threat, if carried out, would mark the end of this 75-year alliance. The world would instantly become a whole lot more dangerous.
I don't know why Donald Trump is so eager to give Putin everything his heart desires. I don't know why he seems to think all authoritarians are "smart" and not brutes and bullies. But I know that a second Trump term threatens to destroy democracy not just at home but around the world. What he's saying right now is that, if he gets the chance, the world order we've known our whole lives is finished.
We have a plan to fight back. This kind of talk is repellent to a significant segment of voters — folks that often vote Republican on national security or veterans issues but who are deeply worried about our democracy if Trump wins.
The only problem is these voters aren't hearing much on the news about Trump's outrageous threats. Instead, they've heard a whole lot about President Biden's age lately. But when it comes to turning the world over to Putin: *crickets*
That's where we come in.
We know our team of national security leaders can speak to these voters with deep credibility. From now until Election Day, we need to find and reach these voters — frequently. We can't do that work without grassroots supporters like you — will you chip in right now to help fund it?
Thank you,
Amy
