For the first time in 17 years, Alaska lawmakers voted to increase unemployment benefits.
That may not sound flashy, but for thousands of Alaska workers and families, it could make a real difference.
For too long, Alaska's unemployment system has failed to keep up with reality. While wages and costs have risen dramatically since 2009, unemployment benefits have remained frozen in place.
That meant workers facing a temporary layoff often found themselves trying to survive on benefits that no longer reflected the cost of living in Alaska.
This year, Democrats in the Legislature stepped up and did something about it.

The bill passed by lawmakers would increase the maximum weekly unemployment benefit, and significantly increase support for workers with children. It would also allow benefits to be updated in the future instead of falling decades behind again.
For workers in Alaska's construction industry, oil and gas sector, tourism economy, and other seasonal jobs, this matters.
For families trying to keep food on the table after a job loss, this matters.
And for a state that has struggled with outmigration and workforce shortages, this matters too.
The truth is that this legislation reflects something we've been talking about all year: when Democrats are in a position to lead, we focus on solving problems.
While others are busy creating political drama, Alaska Democrats have been working to strengthen schools, improve healthcare access, restore pensions for public workers, protect voting rights, and now update unemployment benefits for the first time in nearly two decades.
These wins don't happen by accident. They happen because Alaskans elected leaders who were willing to do the work. And if we want to keep building on that progress in 2026 and beyond, we need to keep electing Democrats who will put working families first.
Thank you for being part of this movement.
