What the USPS means for Alaska

Trump wants to take over the Post Office. For most of the country, that's a political story. For Alaska, it's a lot more than that. I live in Naknek. Population 470. Off the road system. The Postal Service is how people in communities like mine actually get their medicine, their packages, their mail-in ballots. It's not a convenience. It's how we function. Trump has nominated a pair of corporate insiders to take over the USPS Board of Governors. One spent his career cutting companies apart for investors. Neither has any postal experience, and neither has any reason to care about universal service to rural Alaska. If they get confirmed, we're looking at higher prices, slower delivery, fewer post offices, and a push toward privatization. For rural Alaska, that's not an inconvenience. It's a crisis.
